Veterans Day: Thank You Lt. Dan Choi
November 11, 2009
Army 1st Lieutenant Dan Choi graduated from West Point in 2003 with a degree in Arabic language and Environmental Engineering. He served an extended deployment to Iraq, after which he was diagnosed with PTSD and transferred to the New York National Guard.
Following his March 2009 appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show, an Army discharge board recommended Lt. Choi be fired for being gay. His case is still pending.
Lt. Choi is co-founder of a gay West Point graduate group called Knights Out. He is the final member still serving.
(Much has been written on this blog about Lt. Choi’s military experience. Here he shares his coming out experience in a recent speech at University of Rochester and separately for The Moth.)
Lt. Choi, thank you for serving your country.
